Dear Tipperary Supporter

Allianz Hurling League

From Tipperary GAA Scene by Jonathan Cullen, County Board PRO

Our senior hurlers travelled to the TUS Gaelic Grounds last Saturday evening where they took on Limerick in the Allianz hurling league semi final. Having made a very good start Tipperary went in ahead at the break and looked to be in a very strong position. However Limerick put in a very strong second half that saw them take control of the game and claim their spot in this year’s final against Kilkenny.

The senior hurlers attention will now turn to the upcoming Munster hurling championship which will get underway on Sunday April 23rd with an away tie against Clare in Ennis.

Allianz Football League

Our senior footballers played Westmeath in their final game of the 2023 Allianz football league, in Mullingar last Sunday afternoon and unfortunately victory evaded the team once again. Tipperary will now play in Division 4 of the league in 2024 where they will be joined by London, Leitrim, Laois, Wexford, Carlow, Waterford and Longford.

Attention now turns to our Munster senior football opener against Waterford which takes place in FBD Semple Stadium on Sunday April 9th at 2pm.

Munster Under 20 Hurling Championship

Tipperary played Clare in Round 1 of the competition last Saturday afternoon in Cusack Park Ennis. Having started a little slowly the players got to grips with things mid way through the first half coming from 8 points to 2 down after 11 minutes, to lead by 0-12 to 0-11 at the break. The second half was a very close affair with never more than a score or two between the sides and with time almost up in stoppage time, it looked as if Tipperary were going to claim the points. However, Clare scored a last second point to leave the final score Tipperary 0-20, Clare 0-20.

Tipperary’s next game will be against Cork on Wednesday April 5th in Pairc Uí Chaoimh at 7.30pm

Munster Minor Hurling Championship

Our Minor hurlers begun the defence of their Munster and All Ireland crowns on Tuesday March 21st when they played Clare in Shannon. This game was played in very poor weather conditions that made hurling very challenging for all involved. The clare side were very strong and seemed to cope a little better with the conditions as they emerged victorious on a 2-15 to 0-14 scoreline.

Tipperary will now travel to Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday April 4th where they will play Cork in a game that James Woodlock will want to win so as to get back on track.

Best Wishes

Best wishes to Tipperary senior football selector Tommy Toomey who became unwell during last Sundays Allianz football league game in Mullingar. Tommy received excellent attention from the Tipperary and Westmeath medical teams along with the emergency first responders and ambulance staff who came to his aid.

We wish Tommy a speedy return to good health and look forward to seeing him on the sidelines before too long.

Dylan England on how he got on as Tipperary Supporters Club Mascot v Waterford

It was an unbelievable experience for me. I got to be the Tipperary mascot for the match against Waterford. I couldn’t believe it was real. Myself and my mam, met John Coman and others involved with the Tipperary Supporters Club. John brought us across to the field in Semple Stadium. I met Marty Morrissey from RTE and got a picture taken with him. I got to be in the Tipperary team photo before match. After the photo, Tipp captain, Noel McGrath shook my hand and said well done! I then got to meet Liam Cahill who asked me where I was from and what club I played with. He was very nice to me.

The referee, James Owens, then spoke to me and asked me did I want to be in a photo with the two captains. He also asked me did I want to part of the toss at the beginning of the game. I was delighted when he called me over. I got to call the toss and had a chat with the Waterford Captain Steven Bennett. Noel McGrath won the toss for Tipperary. Some photographers took my picture again.

I was then taken on a tour of the dressing room area and the referees room. Myself and my mam got to watch the first half from the commentary box. It was a great view, and we could hear Marty Morrissey commentating and Radio na Gaeltachta and Tg4 also. I then had an interview during halftime with Tipp FM. I was very nervous and couldn’t believe it was going to happen but Paul Carroll who was interviewing me was very nice. Ken Hogan was there too, and he chatted with me about Roscrea club. Paul asked me who my favourite player was and if I played much sport. To top it all off, I got a bag full of Tipperary goodies to bring home with me, along with a couple of match and training sliotars. It was an amazing experience and one that I will never forget. Thanks to John, who made it such a special day for me and was so kind to me- it was a dream come through.
