CONGRATULATIONS TO UPPERCHURCH DROMBANE
The All Ireland Intermediate club hurling title rests in the Slieve Felim hills as the Church dug out a hard-earned win against a doughty Toureen of Mayo. It was a fitting end to the championship for them considering they had accounted for the Cork and Kilkenny champions along the way but the Mayomen proved to be more than a handful and it took a tremendous free from Gavin Ryan to take the game to extra time. That time was a goal fest with the Church getting 3 to push them into what looked an unassailable lead with time almost up but the message didn’t reach Toureen who scored 2-1 in a minute or so to leave 2 in it at the end. A tremendous contest and our congratulations to the Church who overcame not only serious opponents but dreadful luck on the injury front, as Paudie Greene and Paddy Phelan were unable to start…the latter coming on. Earlier today the Tipperary senior hurlers bowed out of the Munster League when a nine point victory over Kerry wasn’t sufficient to overcome the margin created by Waterford in their victory over today’s opponents.
HARTY CUPThe Harty Cup final will definitely be a Tipp-Clare affair after the quarter finals this week. Thurles CBS dug out a win against gritty opponents in De La Salle while Nenagh CBS had a relatively easier passage against Midleton. They meet in the semifinal on the 17th January while St. Flannan’s play Tulla in the other. Flannan’s were expected to have an easy task in dealing with Our Lady’s, Templemore but the latter produced a courageous performance to push the favourites all the way….well done to them. This is probably an appropriate time to mention Liam Ó Donnchú’s excellent treatise on the subject: Dr. Harty Cup: Corn an Artaigh 1918 – 2025.
