MASCOT COMPETITION Last Sunday in Thurles, Jake Lenihan from Ballinahinch carried out his duties as Tipperary Senior Hurling team Mascot with great aplomb. It was a proud day for Jake, appearing in the match programme, meeting with the team and management and doing a fine interview on Tipp FM with Stephen Gleeson.A big thank you to all who make this special day possible from the logistics, the progamme editors, the team management and players and the generosity of Tipp FM.Below is Jake's account in his own words "The day began when my family and I left our home to travel to Semple Stadium for the Tipperary League match where I was going to be the Tipp Mascot. We arrived at the Dome and met Michael Collins from the supports club. He filled us in on the days what was going to happen. Firstly, we got a meal and while queuing for that we met a gentleman who told me when he was my age a great player called Christy Ring walked alongside him in a parade. We finished our meal and headed out onto the field to the tunnel. The first person I met was the Tipperary manager Liam Cahill. He spoke to me and asked me where I was from and where did I play. I told him I was in the half forwards, and he said that’s good we always need a good supply of them. He stood with me for a picture then went out to the team who were warming up. I then went in for a picture with the team. I was going to stand to the side but Willie Connors gestured for me to take a seat in the middle of the team. I was very excited I was getting a photo taken sitting in the middle of the Tipp team. The next and most exciting bit was I met and shook hands with Jake Morris. He said he had seen my profile in the program. I got my picture taken with him and I wished him luck in the game. Next, I got to meet the referee, Johnny Murphy. We spoke about hurling especially Limerick hurling and the club I play for. He asked if I would like a picture with him and the captains and he gave me a sliotar. I got to stand in for the coin toss I can’t remember who won at that point I was just in awe of everything that was going on around me. Micheal then brought me up to the commentary box where I got to see the first half and listen to the commentators talk about, he match. Tipperary are going well and I then met Stephen Gleeson from Tipp Fm and former Tipperary Goalie Ken Hogan. They told me I could do an interview at that point, I sat down and put on headphones and the interview began, I spoke about the match and my Principal Mr. Shane McGrath who played for Tipperary. I thanked Micheal and then watched the second half in the stand. I got a big surprise when I got home from Thurles in the bag, they gave me was a Tipp Jersey signed by the whole team. Its going to hang in the hallway and when I pass it ill remember today.Throughout the day everybody I met was very nice and I can say it was one of the best days of my life one I won’t forget. It was Gran Uncle Seamus Shinners who entered me in the competition big thanks to him also."
