Allianz Hurling League

Our senior hurlers made the long trip to Belfast last weekend to play Antrim in Round 5 of the Allianz hurling league. Played in front of a large attendance that included many Tipperary supporters who travelled from near and far to shout on the team, Liam Cahills men took control of the game from an early stage and by half time it was clear that our winning run in the league was going to continue. Antrim did hit somewhat of a purple patch in the second half as they scored two quick goals. However Tipperary kept their composure to go on and claim the spoils on a 4-28 to 2-16 full time score.

Tipperary now play Limerick in the semi final this Saturday evening at 7.30pm in the TUS Gaelic Grounds in what will certainly be the teams toughest test to date in 2023.

The last semi final clash in March, 2018 saw the teams level at 0.26 each. Tipp won by a goal after extra time. Jason Forde scored 2.11 and the attendance, under Saturday night lights, was 12,006.

There have been 64 previous meetings between Tipperary and Limerick. Tipperary have won 35 games, Limerick 21 and there were 8 draws.

Allianz Football League

Our senior footballers played Offaly in FBD Semple Stadium last Saturday afternoon in Round 6 of the Allianz football league. Before the game commenced both sets of players and management lined up in the centre of the pitch to observe a moments silence in memory of Liam Kearns who passed away the previous weekend. The game itself did not go our way as Offaly emerged victorious on a full time score of 2-14 to 0-13. This result noe means that Tipperary will play in Division 4 next year. The footballers final gam,e of this seasons league takes place this coming Sunday when they travel to play Westmeath in Mullingar.

Munster Under 20 Hurling Championship

Our Under 20 hurlers commence their Munster championship campaign this coming Saturday with an away trip to play Clare in Ennis. Having performed well in the 2022 championship, Manager Brendan Cummins and his selectors will be hoping to build on the experience gained last year and hopefully claim some silverware in the coming months.

Munster Minor Hurling Championship

Tipperary GAA Coaching Conference & Go Games Launch

Tipperary GAA will hold a Coaching and Games Development Coaching conference in LIT Thurles on Saturday March 25th from 9.30am to 1pm. Guest speakers include, Paul Kilgallon (Carver Coaching) Paul will give an overview of creating the ‘correct environment’ for coaching within our clubs, understanding the needs and challenges for both the child and the coach, along with empowering our coaches to maximise fun and development at the appropriate levels. He will also discuss the ‘psychology of coaching’ young children in our Nursery and Go Games age groups.

Colm Crowley, ( Coaching the GAAME) Colm will give very clear instructions on how to correctly plan your years activity. Here, Colm will provide clarity around coaching at the specific age cohort, skill to age progressions, ensuring you understand the correct equipment and resources required to correctly engage your group of child players, along with, how to deliver a meaningful year of ‘development progression’ for your club.

Chrissy McKaigue (Slaughneil Club Coaching Officer, Derry Senior Footballer, Slaughneil’s first ever All-Star Winner)

Chrissy will present a case study based on Slaughneil GAA Club. As we are aware, this club excels in all codes, from Hurling to Football, Ladies Football and Camogie. Chrissy will go into specific details on how they foster and progress the development ethos within their club, how they recruit and retain coaches and players, along with instilling Coach Education and Club Development initiatives. He will also give us specifics on how they get the most from their primary and post primary schools, which in turn nourishes their successful club.

This is a must for all Club Coaching Officers and coaches in general, from under 5 to 13 years old, or anyone interested in your club’s development and progression. We strongly recommend that all clubs in Tipperary ensure they are in attendance for this valuable morning of learning. It promises to be a very informative for all concerned.

Tom Ryan Tipperary and Killenaule RIP

The death has occurred in England of former Tipperary and Killenaule hurler Tom Ryan RIP. Tom won All-Ireland senior hurling medals in 1961 and 1962 and also won many titles with his club Killenaule including a south title in 1958. Tom’s work brought him around the country and he moved from his native home gaining experience and building friendships along the way. He went on to play club hurling in Clare, Galway and Kilkenny. He brought a lot of energy and effort wherever he went and played his part for every team and won county titles in both Clare and Galway. He also represented both Clare and Galway at Intercounty level. Coming near to the end of his time hurling, Tom moved back to Killenaule to finish out his playing career with his home club.

Tipperary GAA extends our sincere sympathies to Tom’s family, friends and the Killenaule GAA Club at this sad time. May he Rest in Peace.

Voluntary Stewards Training Course

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae Thiobraid Árann are holding a Course for voluntary stewards to assist with our games in FBD Semple Stadium and other grounds as the need arises. The course will take place in the Dome on Saturday April 1st between 9.30am and 1pm. The purpose of this course is to ensure that there will be enough qualified stewards for events at these venues. Indeed, all clubs must have enough qualified stewards for games. The course is open to both new and existing stewards.

Conditions: –

• over 18 years of age (male or female).

• Available for a Steward Roster at weekends (average of 10 – 20 events annually)

• Fit and Active

• Friendly, courteous, enthusiastic.

Stewards will be trained and accredited by the GAA National Health & Safety Committee and the course is monitored by the Europlan Group who will be present.

Tipperary Association Dublin

The Tipperary Association Dublin has announced the details of the Annual Awards Function at which the Tipperary Person of the Year for 2022 will be presented to hurling great Padraic Maher and Tim Floyd, retired GAA Co. Board Secretary, will be inducted in the Association’s Hall of Fame.

The awards function will be held on Friday 14 April 2023 in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Newlands Cross, Dublin at 7.30 pm.

Pre-dinner drinks at 7.00 pm.

Tipperary Handball News

It was a busy weekend in Juvenile Handball with the Juvenile All Ireland Semi Finals and Finals being hosted by Kingscourt in Cavan. Tipperary contested 4 Semi Finals on Saturday. In the Boys Under 15 Doubles Conor Ryan & Daniel Mc Kelvey from Silvermines Defeated Oisin Kelly & Ben Mc Garvey from Tyrone in the Semi Final 15/10, 15/2. In the Final on Sunday they beat Travis Gibbons & Colm Finn from Sligo 15/11, 15/5. A great reward for all the training put in and well done also to their coaches. In the Girls U17Doubles Katie Mulcahy & Aoife Williams Lahorna defeated Laura Delaney & Clara Conlon from Tyrone 21/20, 21/11 in the Semi Final but were beaten in the final by a very strong Kilkenny pair of Emma Kelly & Laura Doherty 21/14, 21/5. In the Girls U16 Doubles Semi Final Lucy Gould lahorna & Lucy Slattery Youghalarra were beaten by Laura Duff & Lucy Mc Cullagh Tyrone 21/4, 21/6. In the Boys U17Singles Rocky Reilly Cashel Defeated Padraig Fox from Tyrone 21/1, 21/1 but lost out to Joshua Roche from Wexford in the Final 21/16, 21/5.

Well done to all our Juveniles who reached all Ireland Semi Finals & Finals. The Adult Munster Doubles Championships continue this week and we wish all our players the best of luck in Munster Semi Finals & Finals.
